J.R. Lanier was a building contractor from Gastonia, NC.  John Webster remembers him from his early checker tournaments.  Jim was a master player and  won the North Carolina State Championship at Mount Airy in 1953 and again in 1962 at Greensboro, NC.  John was 20 years old when this Greensboro State Tournament was played.
